Indications
Treatment of intestinal helminthiases (nematode infections) caused by: pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale), the American hookworm/necator (Necator americanus), as well as Trichostrongylus colubriformis and orientalis.
How to take
The standard dose is 10 mg of pyrantel per kg of body weight as a single dose (maximum single dose 1 g). In enterobiasis (pinworms) the dose is repeated after 2–4 weeks. In uncomplicated ascariasis the dose may be halved. In severe Necator americanus infestation — 20 mg/kg on two consecutive days, or the standard dose on three consecutive days. It is taken regardless of meals or time of day, and laxatives are not required. After treatment, a follow-up stool test is advisable if recommended by the doctor. The specific dose and regimen are determined by the doctor.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to pyrantel
- Existing liver disease
- Children under 6 months of age (pyrantel is not used)
- Tablets — in children under 2 years of age
- Pregnancy — only where there are strict medical indications (safety data are insufficient)

Special precautions
In Germany the medicine is prescription-only (rezeptpflichtig/verschreibungspflichtig) — dispensed on prescription. In pinworm infection, close contacts may be infected without symptoms, so it is advisable to treat all family members. Hygiene measures are important: thorough washing of bed linen and clothing, and cleaning of living quarters. After treatment, a follow-up stool test is advisable if recommended by the doctor. It must not be combined with piperazine (mutual antagonism). With theophylline, its blood level may rise, so monitoring is needed.
